Products & Practices

We target mosquitos at two phases of their life cycle, which determines the product and application method used to treat their habitat.

Our Approach

Our Approach

Coming to our present mosquito abatement philosophy has been a journey. AMCD is acutely focused on continually refining our products and practices to best serve our district and preserve our environment.

Two cornerstones of our program are to be ever moving to an increased focus on eliminating mosquito larva before they reach their adult phase and to be on the cutting edge of the most earth-friendly products available.

A globally growing scientific knowledge of mosquitoes and a locally growing community population have made clear the benefits of a shift to targeting mosquito larva. By increasing the share of our products that target larva, we are able to decrease the amount of airborne adulticide (“spray”) products used and the amount of entries onto private property needed to apply it, reducing our footprint in the community and exponentially boosting the effectiveness of our mosquito control program.

As part of today’s more earth-conscious society, AMCD has be a leading user of new, environmentally friendly products such as Natular, a 100% organic mosquito larva targeting product. Natular is AMCD’s most widely used product and has dramatically reduced the need to apply oils and use airborne (“spray”) products in our district.

History of AMCD

History of AMCD

AMCD was formed in 1960 and until around 1993 the following products were effectively used for mosquito abatement:

  • Diesel – (larvae abatement)
  • Malathion – (adult “flyer” abatement)
  • Resmethrin – (adult “flyer” abatement)

From 1993 to 1996 AMCD began trying new, better and more environmentally friendly products for mosquito abatement, such as:

  • BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis var. isae/ensis) – (larvae abatement)
  • Permethrin – (adult “flyer” abatement)
  • Altosid – (larvae abatement)
  • Bonide – (larvae abatement)
  • Vectobac – (larvae abatement)

From 1996 to 2008, AMCD used all of the above for mosquito abatement, each product used for specific applications, but mostly relying on Bonide and Altosid for larvae abatement and Permethrin for the adult “flyer” abatement.

In 2010 AMCD was introduced to Natular and began using it in 2011 for the majority of its larvae abatement. Permethrin is still being used for “flyers”.

From 2011 to 2014 AMCD is relying mostly on Natular for its larvae abatement and Permethrin still being used for “flyers”. These two products, to date, are the most effective and environmentally safe products the AMCD has found for mosquito abatement in its district.

Natular

Natular (spinosad)

Natular is an OMRI-listed product, certifying it as 100% organic mosquito larvae treatment, meaning that the use of Natular in and around organic crop production will not endanger organic certification.*

Natular formulations meet the criteria that make them an excellent choice for not only labeled environmentally-sensitive habitats but also for the growing number of communities with green or sustainable practice guidelines.*

Since the fall of 2011 AMCD has moved to the use of Natular as the foundation of its effort to control mosquitoes at the larval stage. It has proved to be very pest-specific, and we continually observe the presence of other healthy, non-target aquatic life in the immediate area treated with this product. Being a 100% organic naturally-occurring bacteria, it has no bioaccumulation or toxicity to the environment.

The expense of the extensive use of a 100% organic product in our mosquito control program is well worth the benefit of such excellent larvae abatement with the least environmental impact of any product available. AMCD annually purchases more Natular  than any other consumer in the Western States.

We use Natular in two forms:

XRT extended release tablet

Providing 180 days of abatement for 100 square feet of water, these tablets are very effective in areas of standing water.

G-30 granule

Providing 30 days of abatement over the area which it is broadcast, Natular granules have proven very effective in irrigated hay fields and marshy areas.

Natular has received:

The Green Chemistry Award from the U.S. EPA in 1999

Approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Standards Board for use in certified organic agriculture as a natural product in 2002

The 2010 U.S. EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award

Mineral Oil

Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is used to suffocate larvae when they are found to be present. When sprayed on the surface of the water it forms a thin film, preventing larvae from being able to breathe through their siphon tube when they come up for air.

Altosid

Altosid XR Extended Residual Briquette (methoprene)

Altocid provides 150 days of abatement, inhibiting the maturing of mosquito larvae, so that they never emerge as a flying adult capable of transmitting disease. AMCD primarily uses Altosid to treat the drain system in Durango, on the college campus, and in the outlying areas of our district.

Permethrin

Permethrin (synthetic pyrethroid)

Permethrin has been developed to abate flying adult mosquitoes. The advantage of a synthetic pyrethroid is that people who would be allergic to the natural chrysanthemum derivative do not react to a synthetic, and is far more cost efficient to produce. It is applied through ULV (ultra low volume) spraying only at night when bees are not active. Permethrin spraying has proven to be by far the most effective adult mosquito control available.
